About the data
We scraped the universe of owner-level land records in Haryana, India, and combined them with plot-level cadastral maps and transaction histories.
Each record lists every owner of a holding together with their father and, usually, their grandfather; their stated relationship (son, daughter, wife, or widow); and their fractional share of the holding. Remarks on each record log changes such as sales, mortgages, partitions, and relinquishments.
This makes it possible to:
- link owners into families along male descent lines, using father and grandfather names;
- measure who holds what share of family land, by gender and religion;
- follow how holdings are inherited, partitioned, sold, and consolidated over two decades;
- combine ownership with spatial data, such as road construction and satellite imagery.
